The collect for the Third Sunday in Lent asks the Lord to quickly come and protect, both physically and spiritually, from the works of Satan. In Lent we remember Christ’s wonderings in the desert and His temptation to sin. Christ, God the Son, has total and perfect power over the Devil, thus did not give into temptation. Followers of Christ are reminded in James 4:7 to submit to God and to RESIST the devil…and the devil will FLEE FROM US! We are to be in constant prayer and reading of the Word, relying on the power of God’s Spirit to work in and through us against evil. We are broken people in a broken world and we will sometimes fall. But those in Christ can be assured that they have been washed clean by His blood and made perfect in Him.
Third Sunday in Lent (BCP 1979)
Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves
to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and
inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all
adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil
thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy
Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
